From the newspaper the county was reading at the time, on Coalmont borough. The Huntingdon Journal did not write essays about Coalmont; it carried a column of one-line local items, and Coalmont turns up in it. Three of those items are printed below, each with the date it appeared, exactly as the page reads, including the spelling of the day and the errors the scanner made. Nothing has been rewritten, summarised or added to. This is what the contemporary record of a small borough actually looks like.
8 March 1871. "POST OFFICE APPOINTMENTS.—The following Post Office Appointments have been made for this county: James Creek, (Markles burg), George B. Brumbaugh, vice John G. Boyer, resigned ; Dudley, John S. Haffiy, vice B. F. Defibaugh, resigned, and Coalmont, An drew Hicks, vice L. W. Estey, resigned." — 20 May 1874. "Henry S. Green, esq., has the contract for the erection of the new bridge at Coalmont." — 10 June 1874. "An unmarried young man by the name of Frank Hamilton, and of Coalmont, fell off a coal train, near Barnetstown, on the Ist inst., cutting and mangling his leg that amputation was necessary. The operation was performed by Drs. Hughes, Brenaman and Kelly.
