Huntingdon County was created on 20 September 1787 and named for Selina Hastings, Countess of Huntingdon. It has 18 boroughs and 30 townships, 874.6 square miles of land and 14.6 square miles of water.

On the population figures. Each municipal population is the 2020 decennial census count, taken from the Census Bureau's own P.L. 94-171 redistricting file rather than from any secondary summary of it. All forty-eight add up to 44,092, which is exactly the published county total. They did not always. Until 1 September 2026 these figures were read from each municipality's Wikipedia article, 29 of the 48 were wrong, and the note here explained away the resulting 27-person gap as an unreconcilable rounding difference. There was no rounding difference. Shade Gap borough alone was published as 105 against an actual 78.
