What the fact check changed. CORRECTED on arithmetic and on a missed fact that is better than anything in the post. ARITHMETIC: the post says '23 years straight' and '1937-1960'. May 11 1937 to January 7 1960 is 22 years and about 8 months. Rounding up to 23 is an overstatement of a checkable number, so the rewrite says twenty two. NAME CORRECTED: it was the NATIONAL Republican Congressional Committee, which he chaired from 1953. SHARPENED: 'a key player on the Ways and Means Committee' is vague. The source says that at his death he was its RANKING MEMBER. Say the actual position. THE MISSED FACT: he died in office, on January 7 1960 at Bethesda Naval Medical Center, several weeks after brain surgery. That is why the service ends in 1960, and the post presented the end date as if it were a retirement. A man who served twenty two years and died in the job is the story; the post had the dates and missed what they meant.
